Overarching Research Domains

Relationships

How are relationships measured, especially when it comes to patient-clinician relationships in the serious illness setting? What are the current measures, and how can they be most meaningfully applied in our research? How do clinicians in training come to understand humanism in medicine?

Prognostication

How do clinicians in our serious illness setting currently communicate about prognosis? Are there physical clinical indicators that may signal impending end-of-life (& improve communication at this time)? How do clinicians manage uncertainty in prognostication?

Patient Experience

How do patients and families currently experience communication in the serious illness setting? How do patients and their families experience the spaces and facilities available to them at our hospital, and how does this impact their experience of care?

Pancreatic Cancer Oncologists' Perceptions of Palliative Care

Funded by Pancreatic Cancer Canada

What are pancreatic cancer oncology clinicians' perceptions of palliative care? What do they consider the biggest barriers and facilitators of access and referral to palliative care?

Artificial Intelligence and Immersive Reality

AI Summaries work funded by CIHR

How can our clinic's use of data be improved to offer more equitable supportive and palliative care services to patients in need? Can virtual reality be used to generate evidence around best-practice communication behaviors? How does virtual reality-delivered communication training compare with clinician-delivered communication training? What is the current evidence around advanced technologies use in improving communication in serious illness? Can models leveraging advanced computer science (e.g., local large language models) generate pragmatic summaries to supplement chart review; can these reduce clinicians' review time, allowing them to spend more time with patients?
